Zayed Sustainability Prize ( USD 3 million)

The Zayed Future Energy Prize, renamed to the Zayed Sustainability Prize in April 2018, recognizes visionary innovators and individuals with original ideas aimed at celebrating and encouraging innovations and developments to make the world better.

The Prize is funded by the Government of Abu Dhabi as a way of honoring and continuing the sustainability legacy of Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late founding father of the United Arab Emirates. Masdar, the renewable energy firm belonging to Abu Dhabi, manages the Zayed Sustainability Prize.

  • Should be a small or medium-sized enterprise, a social enterprise, an NGO, a non-profit organization (NPO) (with annual revenues of less than US$ 50 million).
  • Show creative, impactful and inspiring solutions
  • A clear vision and a long-term plan to increase the effectiveness and encourage others.
  • For the category Global High Schools: Schools must apply plans for consideration of funding to introduce sustainability initiatives at their schools.

  • Food: 600,000 US dollars
    • Applicants can demonstrate how they motivate people by giving them access to affordable food or related service. Have a clear vision and strategy to implement the solution and increase the effect over the long term.
  • Health: 600,000 US dollars
    • Applicants can demonstrate how they empower people by providing them with access to affordable healthcare or other related services. Have a clear vision and strategy to implement the solution and increase the effect over the long term.
  • Energy: 600,000 US dollars
    • Applicants should demonstrate energy-innovative, efficient and impact-full and inspiring solutions. The applicant organization should also have a clear vision and long-term strategy for implementing your solution and scale-up its impact.
  • Water: 600,000 US dollars
    • Applicants allow people to access reliable and safe potable water. Or provide services such as sanitation, the flexibility of water use or improvement in water quality.


All high schools with students between the ages of 11-19 who propose creative, impact-full and inspiring projects with tangible results in sustainable areas of health, food, and energy should apply. Projects should have a significant educational effect, provide quality education, and help students develop their skills and attain their objectives.


Interested applicants may apply on the website of the Zayed Sustainability Prize using the online submission portal. To apply, you must register as a candidate by entering a Username and Password. You can log in, fill out the application form, save and update the details at any time using your account. The application must have English as its language.

Applicants that apply to one or more of the above-mentioned groups except schools which may apply only once. Both finalists are invited on a pay trip (accommodation and flight ticket) to the award ceremony.

The winners will be announced at the Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony held in Abu Dhabi in January 2021, during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
