In 2008, in order to improve Canada’s capacity for the attraction of, retención of world-class doctoral students, the Government of Canada launched Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS), establishing Canada as the regional center of excellence for science and higher education. Throughout the social and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering as well as health students, Vanier academics show leadership qualities and high academic achievement.

Selection Criteria


  • A Vanier CGS candidate is qualified by Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and external citizens
  • Just one Canadian organization that would have earned the nomination
  • Pursue the first PhD (including the joint MD / PhD, DVM / PhD, JD / PhD research program – where there is a proven, significant component of study). Remember that the funding only extends to the PhD part of a joint degree;
  • Intended to undertake a full-time PhD thesis (or a joint PhD research program such as MD / PhD, DVM / PhD, JD / PhD) at the nominating institution in the summer semester or in the academic year following the announcement of the results; for the Joint University Research Program only the PhD component of the Joint Graduate Research Program is available.
  • have completed a full-time doctoral program of no more than 20 months from 1 May 2021;
  • Applicants in the group of MD / PhD, DVM / PhD will have access to the 32-month period, whether or not they have already been enrolled in a Master’s program, by 1 May 2021, completed a full-time study in their doctoral program by no more than 32 months. or”
  • Have done a full-time program of studies not more than 32 months until 1 May 2021, when accelerated from baccalaureate to a phD directly (no time spent in a Masters); or
  • Having finished a full-time doctoral thesis not more than 32 months by 1 May 2021 without a master’s degree in a PhD program and without a Master’s degree.
  • You have earned an overall first-class average in each of the two years of full-time study or equivalent decided by your institution. For the concept of the first-class average, candidate are encouraged to contact the institution; and
  • A PhD or fellowship by CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC must not be obtained or retained to pursue or complete a PhD program.
