250 Ph.D. Fellowships will be awarded in the 2020/21 academic year
The Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which was established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) in 2009, seeks to attract the finest and brightest learners in the globe to pursue their Ph.D. programs at Hong Kong universities.
The Fellowship offers an annual stipend of HK$309,600 (around US$ 39,700) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$12,900 (around US$ 1,700) per year for a period of up to three years for each award. In the academic year 2020/21, 250 Ph.D. Fellowships will be given. For awards that require more than three years to finish the Ph.D. degree, the selected universities may provide extra assistance. Please contact the relevant universities directly for information.
Universities in Hong Kong normally start their academic year in September.
Shortlisted applications, subject to their fields of study, will be assessed by one of the two HKPFS Selection Panels with specialists in the wide fields concerned — one for Science, Medicine, Engineering and Technology and one for Humanities, Social Science and Business Studies.
While academic excellence is of prime consideration, for the choice of applicants, the Selection Panels will take into account, but not restricted to, the four following criteria:
- Academic excellence;
- Research ability and potential;
- Communication and interpersonal skills; and
- Leadership abilities.
In their HKPFS apps, applicants can select up to two programs in one or two universities for Ph.D. research. They are also needed to submit requests for Ph.D. acceptance directly for their chosen program(s) to the appropriate university(s). Therefore, applicants are needed to fully comply with their chosen universities and programs ‘ admission requirements. On 1 September 2019, the HKPFS 2020/21 is calling for apps.
